SCENARIOS
FROM AFRICA is a community mobilization, education and media process
about HIV/AIDS carried out with and for young people.
The process started life in 1997 as SCENARIOS FROM THE
SAHEL, drawing inspiration from "3,000 Scenarios
against a virus", a project implemented in France between 1992 and
1994 by CRIPS and its partners.
SCENARIOS
FROM AFRICA gives children and young adults an exciting opportunity to educate themselves
and others about HIV/AIDS by inviting them to participate with internationally
acclaimed directors in the production of a
growing collection of short films.
The
films are based on ideas thought up by young people in a series of contests.
So far, more than 145,000 young people from 47 African countries have taken
part in these contests. Over 1,500 local and international partner
organizations are involved in carrying out the contests and selecting
the winning ideas.
Thirty-five
short fiction films are currently available. Some of the films
are very touching, others extremely funny. They are distributed
on a non-commercial basis across Africa and well beyond, for broadcast
on national television stations, international satellite networks, and the Internet.
SCENARIOS films have
been broadcast on locally-based television stations in almost every country
in sub-Saharan Africa, including on over 20 stations
in Nigeria alone. The films are also collected on 3 regional, multi-language DVD sets for use at community level. They are available
in a wide and growing range of African and European languages and are
reaching tens of millions of people.
SCENARIOS
FROM AFRICA is coordinated by GLOBAL DIALOGUES, a non-profit organization
(UK charity no. 1071484) dedicated to promoting excellence in communication
about HIV/AIDS.
